Hell Difficulty Tutorial (HDT) is a litrpg series of novels. For the uninitiated, this is very similar to the iseaki genre where the character is moved to an alternate universe, often a fantasy universe. The litrpg genre seems to be the English speaking version of this, and is usually strictly written rather than in manga/comic form.

In HDT, our MC, Nathaniel, along with everyone on the bus he was riding on were transported to the tutorial of "the system". This is another common theme with the litrpg genre, there is often a game like interface that serves to give a concrete representation of stats and skills of the characters. In this case, the tutorial appears to serve as an introduction to how magic works for worlds that did not previously have it. It's still somewhat vague, but it appears that in this universe 2 worlds that have been both introduced to the system will be "paired" which involves the worlds fighting and only one surviving. It is unclear so far as to the reason for this. It could be due to a lack of resources or for entertainment.

I would say I enjoy these books, but I wouldn't say they are good. The MC is a sociopath and the writing is just ok. The actual story doesn't do anything crazy and the text was most likely written by someone who's native language was not english. This isn't to say it's bad, the grammar is usually good and the text isn't hard to understand. Just that sometimes a character will say something and I will think to myself "that's not how people speak". Usually the biggest thing that sticks out to me is not using contractions.

The MC is a sociopath. This appears to have been a huge turn off for a lot of people based on some reviews, I get it, it definitely throws me off sometimes. The first book was by far the worse, the MC would treat everyone else like they were trying to kill him at all times and would often be cruel and violent to people would you would think would be on his side. The author takes steps to justify this as well, usually confirming the MC's worries about this. The MC is going on somewhat of an arc to get better about this though, and as the MC get's more sociable, the world seems to get better around him. So that's somewhat of a character arc I suppose. I think my biggest complaint with this is that it's a slow as fuck burn. I'm five books in and a good portion of the time he's identical to the book 1 version of him.

Really what I enjoy about this series is the world building. If I wasn't enthralled with the idea of how magic works in this world and the implications of having a game like system put into place I would have dropped it a long time ago. I enjoy the way combat is written and the weight that is placed on it. It feels like the characters could die at any time and in the beginning they do. The author didn't shy away from offing a good portion of the starting cast, even some that had gotten a substantial amount of development. Unfortunately for me my favorite character didn't make it past the first book.

I would recommend this if you want some pretty good world building and can stomach a bit of psychopathy. My other issue with this, though, is that you can only get it on amazon kindle. Which is a whole other rant.
